WHY NEED MFM ?
MFM lays the foundation of a traceable, reliable, secure measurement solution, widely trusted in bunker industry.
What is the principle?
The MFM measures mass flow rate through the tube oscillation frequency based on Coriolis principle.
How does the MFM measure?
When process fluid flows through the MFM, it is channelled equally into two tubes. An exciter device vibrates the tubes at natural frequency. The sensors at inlet and outlet detect the time change of the tube oscillation. This change is proportional to the mass flow rate.

Are the MFMs welcomed by various ports?
According to the survey conducted by International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and BIMCO, the majority of the respondents agreed the needs of transparency. The survey found that 76% of them see the benefits of mandatory using MFM.
It is mandatory to use MPA-approved MFMs for all Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) bunker delivery in the Port of Singapore, from 1 January 2017. And distillates bunker delivery is also mandated to use MFM since 1 July 2019.
The port of Rotterdam is preparing to mandate MFM for bunker delivery, following the introduction of bunker licence scheme.
The port of Antwerp-Bruges is set to jointly mandate MFM for bunker delivery with the port of Rotterdam authority.

ISO 22192: 2021
The standard covers "procedures and requirements for the transfer of bunkers to vessels by bunker tankers using the MFM system. It encompasses the process leading to the approval of the MFM system as installed on bunker tankers and post-approval bunkering operation. It covers terminology, specifications, requirements and procedures on metrology, system integrity, metering system selection and installation, MFM system verification, bunker delivery and dispute handling."

Singapore Standard Code of Practice for Bunker Mass Flow Metering (SS648 : 2019)
SS 648 was developed for the benefit of the bunker industry in Singapore comprising ship owners, operators, charterers, bunker suppliers, bunker craft operators and bunker surveyors and is intended to enhance the efficiency of bunkering operators and promote best practices in the measurement of bunker fuel delivered.
The purpose of this SS 648 is to document principles, requirements and procedures in the application of mass flow metering to bunker in Singapore.
